Night Guards

Lexington Dental Care in Lexington MA

Many people are afflicted with bruxism, or teeth grinding. Some people may do this consciously during the day, but it is a larger problem at night while you are asleep. Grinding your teeth can damage enamel, wear down teeth, cause jaw pain, or irritate your gums.

If you grind your teeth you should consider a night guard (occlusal splint). The night guard provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. All night guards are custom fitted for comfort, and positioning your jaw correctly.  Night guards involve taking an impression of your teeth and having two to three fitting appointments to assure proper alignment of the jaw.  Proper alignment can help with TMJ or muscle pain.  Night guards are very durable and can be used for up to 10 years.

New studies have shown that some patients who grind their teeth could have a sleep disorder.  To diagnose this properly involves a comprehensive exam at a sleep clinic.  Please ask you physician for a referral to a sleep clinic if you snore, have a restless sleep, or suspect you have sleep apnea.
